ˇ@ˇ@A Brief History of the Graduate Institute of American Studies (GIAs)
ˇ@ˇ@In light of the increasingly key roles that Taiwan and American played in the international affairs, Chang Chi-yun, the founder of Chinese Culture University, established the ˇ§Graduate Institute of Sino-American Relationsˇ¨ (GIAs) in 1974 and invited Ambassador Liu Yu-tang to be the first director.
ˇ@ˇ@In 1988, Dr. Chen Yu-chun served as the second director, and the Instituteˇ¦s name was changed into the ˇ§Graduate Institute of American Studiesˇ¨ in 1991, expanding its scope to include the study of social sciences. American political thoughts, constitutional system, and foreign policies were added to the Instituteˇ¦s research focus and curriculum planning, and subjects of American law, economy, society, culture, history and security strategy were also included to comply with the change of international order and the demands of the market during the post-Cold War era.
ˇ@ˇ@Since August 1, 2007, Professor Shaw Yu-ming has served as the third director of the Institute.
